Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on what we do, how we stay independent, and how AI, governance and operational readiness actually work in energy and high-hazard industry.

About Upskill Energy Advisory

What is Upskill Energy Advisory?

Upskill Energy Advisory is an independent, client-side advisory firm. We help boards and executive teams in energy and high-hazard industry adopt AI, digital twins and operational change safely and effectively. We are based in Doha and work across the GCC and the United Kingdom.

What makes the firm independent?

Our advice serves the client, not a vendor's sales target. We have no product to sell on an engagement, we work across several technology providers rather than being captive to one, and any commercial relationship we hold is disclosed in writing. Independent assurance and governance work is ring-fenced from any partner income.

Who is the founder?

Calum Johnson founded the firm. He started offshore as an apprentice and worked up through operations, commissioning and project assurance into commercial advisory and joint-venture leadership, and today leads go-to-market for industrial digital-twin technology across the GCC. That operator-to-boardroom path is the basis of the firm's advice.

Where does the firm operate?

The practice is based in Doha, Qatar, and serves clients across the Gulf Cooperation Council and the United Kingdom.

AI governance and assurance

What is AI governance, and why does it matter in high-hazard industry?

AI governance is the set of controls, evidence and accountability that make an AI system safe to rely on. In high-hazard environments such as LNG, nuclear or process plants, an ungoverned model can create operational, safety, regulatory and reputational risk. Governance is what lets a board trust AI near live operations.

Do we need ISO/IEC 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001 is the international management-system standard for AI. You do not always need formal certification, but its principles of risk assessment, oversight, documentation and continual improvement are a sensible baseline for any organisation deploying AI in regulated or safety-critical settings. We help you adopt what is proportionate to your risk.

Who offers independent AI governance for energy and LNG operators?

Upskill Energy Advisory provides independent AI governance and assurance for energy, LNG, utilities, nuclear and process operators across the GCC and the UK. Because we are client-side and not a technology vendor, our governance findings carry no conflict of interest.

Readiness and adoption

What is operational readiness assurance?

Operational readiness assurance confirms that an asset, its people, procedures and systems are genuinely ready before start-up or a major change. It reduces the delay, cost and safety exposure that come from commissioning something that is not ready. It is one of our core services and reflects the founder's commissioning background.

What is AI readiness?

AI readiness is an honest assessment of where AI can create real value for your operation, and whether your data, processes and people can support it, before you invest. We produce a costed, prioritised roadmap so spending follows value rather than hype.

How do you move an AI pilot into production?

Most industrial AI stalls between a promising pilot and trusted production. We close that gap with governance, data foundations, integration and operational readiness, so a tool that worked in a trial becomes something the front line can safely rely on at scale.

What is a digital twin, and is my asset ready for one?

A digital twin is a live, data-driven model of a physical asset used to monitor, predict and decide. The hard question is not which platform to buy but whether the asset, data and use case justify the investment. We give an independent readiness and value assessment before major platform spend.

Working with us

Which sectors do you serve?

We focus on high-governance, asset-heavy sectors: LNG and integrated energy, utilities and networks, nuclear and regulated infrastructure, and chemicals and process industry. We also apply high-hazard discipline to critical data-centre operations.

What advisory services do you offer?

Six service lines: Board and Executive Advisory; AI Readiness and Strategy; AI Governance and Assurance; Operational Intelligence and AI; Pilot-to-Production AI; and Operational Readiness and Transformation.

How do we start working with you?

It starts with a confidential discovery call to understand the decision or problem you are facing. From there we scope a focused piece of work, often a workshop, readiness review or governance baseline, that can expand as trust builds. You can book a call from the contact page.
